I was born on my parents farm in Leicestershire, where as a boy I always loved wildlife, and I collected birds eggs, went ferreting for rabbits, and shooting with my dog.
In latter years I took up hunting with the Cottesmore and Quorn foxhounds. In 1992 I retired from farming, and moved to Exmoor, and started riding and hunting on Exmoor where I learned a lot about the red deer, and other wild life on the moor, including ravens, buzzards, kesterels, sparrow hawks, hen harriers and others.
In 2002 I started to drive the Exmoor Safari landrover. Over the last ten years I have seen all the seasons changes to the magnificent countryside, the red deer when they loose there antlers, and grow new ones covered in a velvet skin, and then the big stags at rutting time. To hear the Cuckoo and see the new born lambs, and the Exmoor Ponies with their foals. And drive through ancient woodlands. A trip in the Exmoor Safari landrover is a very enjoyable journey.
I am a local man who loves Devon and Exmoor, leading walks and driving Safari's here at every opportunity. In spite of a quater of a century of service with the local police, my preference is not for fast cars and main roads, but for the hidden, single-track minor roads of North Devon and the Moor, the steeper and more convoluted the better! You will find it helpful on Exmoor at night to be driven by one who knows and loves the place, and takes pleasure in sharing it.

Until quite recently my knowledge of astronomy was limited to the basics of using the night sky for orientation purposes, drawing my children's attention to the marvels around them and to staring upwards in awe on a clear night, watching for meteorites and wondering. More recently that curiosity has made itself better informed, and the process continures; there is much to know. Many times when leading parties on Exmoor I have proved that everyone who is interested enough to be there knows something; our combined knowledge is much greater than that of most individuals, and part of the pleasure is in the sharing. Why not come along and share with us?
I work for the Exmoor National Park where I have worked for the last 40 years, enjoying every aspect of National Park work, from path work, forestry and sawmilling, helping to look after Exmoor's beautiful ancient woodlands and moorland, and on the way seeing and watching Exmoor's wildlife.

I have a keen interest in wildlife great and small, and because of the pivilege of working on Exmoor have seen and delt with alot of them. I have had experience in dealing with Exmoor Ponies and performing tasks on them such as rounding up, checking them over with vets and helping with branding. I have also had a lot to do with the deer count on Exmoor this is held once a year so there is an idea of how many are on the moor.

I have a wealth of Knowledge of Exmoor having travelled the bridleways and footpaths on a weekly basis. One such job was when I helped in opening up the South West Coast Path in the 70's between Porlock and Combe Martin. Back then a Quad Bike was rarly heard of so all equipment and material had to be carried by hand. Over the years working out of the National Park depot I have collected seed for a wide range of native trees, and ran the National Parks tree nursery. One of my greatest achievements here was the managing and planting of the Millennium Wood at Bye Common in 2000.

Having worked for the National Park for 40 years conservation is very important to me. There is nothing better than walking the moorland on a summer evening with osund and sights the the moor has to offer.
